COHE Terms of Use

While in many ways we'd actually be thrilled to learn that people are breaking the rules to learn about humanism(!), U.S. and foreign copyright laws do protect the content (text and graphics) of the COHE website. We hope you'll respect our investment in this resource by observing a few restrictions about its use.

Because we want as many people as possible to visit COHE and understand humanism, we allow and encourage reproduction of some elements of our site, subject to the following guidelines and terms:

  1. We encourage recipients of general COHE e-mail announcements and/or Institute announcements about COHE to forward those messages freely. (Note: to avoid security problems, you should NOT forward e-mails about your personalized COHE account.)

  2. We encourage the re-publication of our logos and banners on other websites and in print media for the purpose of linking to, and spreading the word about, COHE. We especially wish to work with our many friends in the freethought movement to spread the benefits of COHE as widely as possible. Contact us if you have ideas: webmaster@humanisteducation.com.

  3. We encourage the re-publication of excerpts (an unmodified paragraph or two) from our Study Area Overviews and our demo course, Introduction to Humanism, on other websites and in print media for the purpose of spreading the word about COHE. Full attribution must be given; i.e., the Continuum of Humanist Education and the Institute for Humanist Studies must be credited and, in the case of websites, hyperlinked.

  4. Things you cannot do with our content:
    • re-publish any module in its entirety
    • re-publish portions of modules other than our Study Area Overviews or our demo course for the purpose of sharing with non-COHE students (example: posting a section of an introductory module on a list-serve or website)
    • save protected content to your hard drive and then re-publish or distribute it via e-mail or other means (example: saving an image on your hard drive, then using it to illustrate your website or an article you're writing)
    • modify content (summarize, reword, etc.) for any reason, then publish or distribute it (example: summarizing the lessons of a comprehensive module and then passing this summary out at a meeting)
    • use our text and/or graphics for commercial purposes (example: creating and selling a t-shirt illustrated with a quote or graphic from a COHE module)

Keep in mind that some COHE images and content are republished from other sources under the original owner's terms of use or with permission given explicitly to COHE. Your use of content from non-IHS sources is subject to the original terms, which we are not responsible for conveying or enforcing.

That said, we will try to accommodate special requests whenever possible. We do reserve the right to deny or rescind permission for any reason, at any time, and at our sole discretion. All decisions made by the Institute for Humanist Studies about the use of COHE material and our other intellectual property are final.

Question about using our content? Please direct it to webmaster@humanisteducation.com.
